Course layout and Curriculum:
Section 1 – Introduction
Here I introduce myself and speak about the upcoming lessons. I introduce the idea of meditation and re-assure the student that anyone can practice these techniques regardless of religion, race or creed.
Section 2 – Before We Get Started
Here I discuss some basic housekeeping elements and also discuss safety. We should always make sure to be sitting or laying down in a comfortable environment that is safe. Quietness is not a pre-requisite and actually noise sometimes is preferred as it give the student something to focus on.
Section 3 – De-Mystifying Meditation
This is set up in 3 videos:
Video #1 – Everything is Meditation
Everything we do with mindfulness and awareness can be classified as meditation. Playing with your dog, eating an ice cream sandwich, focusing on the breath; these are all things that are examples of meditation when our awareness is placed upon them. In this the student is beginning to be introduced to the idea that meditation does not have to be what they may have taught.
Video #2 – Postures and Chanting Not Required
Yogic postures and chanting are usually associated with meditation, and this can be a deterrent for many prospective students. This lesson explains that this is not the case with meditation and one can achieve the same or similar results without the ideas and stereotypes that have been so deeply embedded in this practice.
Video #3 – Thoughts and How to Deal With Them
The idea of meditation is usually also associated with the idea that one can ‘turn off’ their thoughts. This is another false concept of meditation and this lesson shows the student how to break free from this idea. Ironically the only way to turn off ones thoughts is to face them head on with awareness, which is what this lesson teaches. Like magic, when we place our awareness upon the thoughts that are barraging us like a light in the dark it makes the thoughts go away. Like waves thoughts come and go this video explains how to understand this concept and how to deal with it effectively.
Section 4 - “The Meditation Game”
This section consists of 3 videos that walk the student through a game called ‘The Meditation Game’. In this game the student is asked to watch and listen to a video and focus their awareness on how many sounds they hear. It’s a simple yet effective and fun way to jump into meditation in a way that’s easy to digest.
The video consists of sounds that everyone would be familiar with so that they can easily hear them. The sounds are recorded at different volumes so some sounds are more challenging to pick up on. The student has to be focused and present to win the game. It’s a great tool for focus and awareness, and it also teaches the student that sounds aren’t a bad thing when meditating. One of the hurdles to meditation and the way most teach it is that the sonic environment has to be very very quiet. However life doesn’t work that way, so this teaches the student how to use reality and the sounds that sometimes accompany it, to further deepen their awareness and contemplative skills.
Section 5 – The Meditations
This section is where the real practice comes in. Every one of these audio/video modules helps the student start meditating.
Lecture 10 - focuses on where to focus your gaze when meditating. Here we allow the student to choose where they would like to focus. Usually the third eye or the heart are the places they will be directed towards.
Lecture 11 – Introduction to Meditation – This is where we introduce some basic concepts of meditation and what we’re about to embark on with the guided MP3’s.
Lecture 12-15 – “Listening Meditations” – These are the guided meditations which the student listens to to train them in listening and awareness. There are different time frames to choose from (5 and 10 minutes) and the choice of listening with the clock sound, or without it.
Lecture 17-21 - the “Breath Hold” – These meditations introduce a technique that is great for achieving calmness and easy anxiety. Students are taught how to hold their breath for a short period of time, with mindfulness, to slow their heart rate.
Lectures 23-27 – The “Vibration Meditation” – These meditations introduce a humming technique similar to chanting but without any religious association attached to it. This gets the body energized and vibrating so that the student can feel their own power. This increases the students awareness and opens up the door to more contemplation as it can unlock stored energy that the student may never have experienced within themselves before.
Conclusion – This video wraps up the course and encourages the student to continue their practice.
