I suppose you are curious what you can get from this course. Firstly, this course is about grammar, not grandma, grammar. I am sure you have heard that grammar is not so necessary in learning English, you just need read books, watch films and speak as much as possible. If you think so I’ve got bad news for you. Because firstly, without grammar it’s impossible to express what you really want to say, so people might misunderstand you and it may cause problems especially at work with your business partners or even on holiday especially if you call to the police, an insurance company or you need some medical help. Secondly, without grammar you can understand only the main idea of a text or a dialog between people, but not the details. For example, just translate the following phrases: Firstly, What did you get up to yesterday? Secondly, I am used to playing football or she must have done it on Wednesday. If you have translated all 3 examples you don’t need this course! But if you haven’t, I will tell you what you can find in this course:

Firstly, you will know about articles a/an/the, for example, should we say at university or in university, Italians or the Italians, or should I say:I like dogs or I like the dogs?

Secondly, you will know about comparative and superlative adjectives. For example, should we say drive faster or more fast, or he is busier or more busy? Or should we say he is my older brother or he is my elder brother?

Thirdly, I will tell you about plural nouns. In particular, when instead of “S” you must add “ES” or even “IES” or when at the end of plural nouns you need to say – [IZ] like boxes, when [Z] like tables and when just [S] like books. And also, you will know exceptions which you should remember, such as a woman – women, a fish – fish, a bacterium [bæk'tɪərɪəm] – bacteria.

In lecture number 4 you will know about uncountable nouns. For example, should we say: My clothes is dirty or my clothes are dirty? The police is coming or the police are coming? The news are good or the news is good?

In lecture number 5 – I will tell you about possessive nouns. For instance, should we say: That’s my parents’ house or that’s the house of my parents? Chuck and Ann’s children or Chuck’s and Ann’s children? He is a John’s cousin or he is a cousin of John?

In lecture number 6 you will find information about verb be, regular and irregular verbs. In particular, why in English there are 3 forms of verbs, for example, go – went – gone or do – did –done, and why verb be is so specific.

In lecture number 7 you will know about the present, past and future simple and also about the formula “be going to V1”. For example, the sentence “I was in Spain” – is it the past simple or not? Also I will tell you what the difference is between “I will go to the cinema tomorrow” and “I am going to go to the cinema tomorrow”.

In the final lecture we will have a look at the present, past and future continuous. For instance, should we say: “I was watching TV last night” or “I watched TV last night” or is it correct to say: “I studied at university from 2001 to 2006, then I lived in the USA for 5 years and now I am living in London?
