Vision and visual processing in education and special needs

Vision and visual processing in education and special needs

A child with vision or visual processing difficulties in the classroom will underachieve. Parents and professionals have to be able to recognise when problems are present, what effects they have, and how to deal with them. Most children with problems are not recognised and consequently their education suffers. This is particularly important in special needs such as autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia. For many children, sort their vision or perceptual difficulties out and you will get a massive improvement in performance. Sadly this is usually not done. in this course we will try to recreate visual and visual perceptual problems in an on screen way, bring in real people who describe what the effects of their difficulties are, and in the end show what can be done to manage these problems. Currently professional interventions can be very costly, and are often of limited use as children often fall into areas in which the professional has limited knowledge. We show some low cost methods, self assessment options as well as what can be expected in an optometric assessment. We cover what an eye test assesses, and what it doesn't. This area can be extremely complex, but we have kept it simple and accessible to every parent or teacher. We have shown some state of the art methods as well as very simple methods that can be home made by anyone. Where possible we have recreated the visual effects on screen, and some of the facial recognition and expression recognition effects in autism are ground breaking. There are many videos, animations and diagrams (although we have tried to keep these to a minimum). We have not shown the complex mathematics as we believe it just confuses people. But we have shown how it is important. Some of the videos are very moving, some are funny. If you think you know how your child sees, you don't. But we have included a comprehensive questionnaire to help youfind out, and a way of determining just how difficult their visual processing problems are. We have also included an updated  book to give a wider level of know;ledge of the subject.
