Hepatitis C Pharmacology
Hepatitis C Pharmacology
According to the CDC, there are an estimated 2.4 million cases of Hepatitis C. About half of the cases of Hepatitis C will self-resolve, while the other half will go on to become chronic Hepatitis C. There are usually very little signs of symptoms in chronic Hepatitis C until it causes serious damage like cirrhosis and liver cancer. Left untreated, it can result in death.
In this course you will learn about the latest medications that has revolutionized how Hepatitis C is treated. For decades, the treatment of Hepatitis C virus has depended on two main medications: PEGylated interferon and ribavirin. These two medications had a cure rate of about half of their patients. These medications also had numerous side effects.
In the past 10 years, there has been groundbreaking advances in which the use of direct acting antivirals have been developed that bring about over 90% cure rates with minimal side effects. Because Hepatitis C can lie dormant and not be detected in individuals until it has caused significant damage, it is important to know how the disease can be spread, at risk populations, and who is recommended to be tested. All of this will be addressed in this course.
In this course, you will learn about the mechanism of action, side effects, and drug interactions of the medications that have turned curing Hepatitis C into a reality.
