An introduction to Carbon Capture and Storage
An introduction to Carbon Capture and Storage
The subject is framed by giving an overview of the technology and an explanation of the challenges faced to reach net zero. This is followed by a description of the technologies available to capture carbon (post combustion capture, capture by oxyfuel combustion, and pre combustion capture) and their level of readiness together with the benefits of geological storage and mechanisms that trap the CO2 underground (geological trapping, CO2 dissolution in water, residual trapping and mineral trapping).
The focus of the course is on the design consideration during transportation of CO2 with a detail explanation on the implications of flowing CO2 in dense phase or multiphase flow. The special challenges of flowing under multiphase flow conditions are given. Explanations of the different operations and transient scenarios will be given. Mainly:
• Composition of CO2 stream
• Dewatering requirements
• Pipeline design capacity
• Shutdown/restart
• Turndown/ramp-up
• Line packing
• Depressurization
Please use the chat if you have any questions during the course and I will be happy to answer them. If you have any request for future courses also let me know and I will keep them in consideration.
The course has over one an a half hour of lectures and seven quizzes. You will receive a certificate at the end of the course.

What you will learn
- The subject is framed by discussing what is carbon capture and storage, why do we have to deploy it, the technologies currently available to capture carbon and the requirements that the geological reservoir needs to have to ensure the carbon will stay in place. This is followed by a description of design consideration during transportation of CO2. The course has over one an half hours of lectures and 7 quizzes.
