Introduction to Music Theory

Since music has been a part of culture, people have been looking for ways to write it down, so it can be remembered and recited at any time.

The system we use today has been developed over hundreds of years and allows any musician, who can read it, to perform the music the way the composer wrote it (or a writer to recall their own music).

Theory is a fundamental part of music. As a composer I make use of my understanding of music theory every day. Music theory sometimes has a reputation of being dull or irrelevant, and that we don’t need to learn it, or that it’s just old rules, but this is not true and I will try to show you that by making this course practical and give you an understanding of why it works, as well as how, to unlock a deeper understanding of music itself.

About the Course

The Introduction to Music Theory - Grade 1 course is designed to provide a practical course on music theory at the grade 1 level. The course focuses on teaching you theoretical concepts in a practical manner, as I think theory is only important if it helps us to actually create music.

The course introduces music theory from the very beginning and builds on the knowledge gained through each section in an easy to learn manner.

There are 18 course sections, and a practice exam, which will begin to teach you this system from the beginning and show you the basics of musical theory so that you can begin your journey as a musician, composer or student.

Each section contains video lessons and short quizzes to practice what you are learning.

About Me

My name is Tom Glasson, I’m a musician and I have been playing in bands for 15 years, I am also a composer and have been writing music for videos and games for the past 10 years.

I have personally seen significant improvement to my music both as a composer and a musician through studying music theory, so I am excited to share that with you.
