Signals and Systems_Basics

Signals and Systems_Basics

In this part-1 of the Signals and Systems course, the students will be introduced to the basics of signals and systems. They get familiarized with standard signals in CT and DT domains.

Operations performed on a dependent variable like Amplitude scaling, Addition, Multiplication, etc., are explained with examples for both continuous-time and discrete-time systems.

Operations performed on independent variable viz., Folding, Shifting and Time scaling explained with examples for both continuous-time and discrete-time systems.

Precedence rule explained with examples.

Given a complex signal, how to mathematically model it in terms of standard signals is explained with examples

The classification of signals viz., Even and Odd, Periodic and Non-Periodic and Energy and Power explained with examples.

The method to find the even and odd components of a signal is explained with examples.

Method to test the class of the given signal explained with a sufficient number of diverse problems.

Practice problems are also given so that students can independently solve these problems and gain confidence.

A system is an interconnection of subsystems explained with examples.

The properties of systems viz., Memory, Causality, Invertibility, Stability, Time invariance, and Linearity are explained with examples.

How to test for the classification of the given signal is explained with solved problems

Several problems were solved to test the properties.

A set of practice problems was included for the students to solve by applying the methods described.

What you will learn
  • Students gain an in-depth understanding of signals, both continuous time and discrete time. They are introduces to various standard signals(CT and DT), the various operations performed on the signals along with the classification of signals. They will also be introduced to systems and their classifications. Each category will have a number of solved examples which helps the students to understand the subject to a depth. Each section will have a set of quiz questions and practice problems to test their level of understanding the subject.
