What is Indian head massage?

Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic treatment that has been practised in India for thousands of years, and is incredibly relaxing. Part of the Hindu health care practice of Ayurveda, Indian head massage focuses on your head, neck and shoulders. Indian head massage is a deep massage, which uses a variety of pressure and techniques that tap into your seven “‘chakras” or paths of energy and encourage healing and balance in your whole body. Indian head massage has become a popular component of combined treatments or rituals, including massage and facials.

History of Indian Head Massage

From the name, you can clearly guess the origin of this massage. Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic practice done by Indian women to their daughters. It is believed that these techniques are more than 1000 years old. Head massage is performed by combining different oils such as coconut, almond, buttermilk, olive etc. Those oils are usually used to keep the hair in good condition. However, while massage, the optimum pressure is given on the head provides a soothing feel, which makes a tired person relax.

It was then expanded to England in 1973 by an Indian, Narendra Mehta, who started head massage practice in England and spread to other western countries. He also developed the massage system to the neck and shoulder region, which is usually a traditional practice by Indian barbers in this subcontinent.

Benefits of Indian Head Massage

It has many health benefits, including both emotionally and physically. The goal of this massage is to release tension from the top upper part of the body like the neck, head and shoulder. Besides, it can relieve insomnia, fatigue, and headaches.

Following are the 7 benefits of Indian head massage you can get.

  1. Relief from migraines

Tension in the mid-back, head or even in the neck can turn into headaches and migraines. Head massage will focus on applying pressure on the mid-back, shoulders and arm, which actively reduces the underlying tension in the muscles. Besides, massage around the neck and head increase the circulation of the cerebral fluid that can help to relieve headaches.

  1. Increase hair growth

Massaging on the scalp and head boost the nourishment and oxygen to the hair follicle, which increases hair growth. On the other hand, kneading the head during the head massage opens up blood vessels, which ultimately helps in better absorption. All hair follicle needs an equal amount of nutrients for proper growth. Therefore, the more massage your hair receives, the more growth it will acquire.

  1. Stimulates Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system works on removing the waste product from the body tissues and back to the heart. Indian head massage assists this removal process by stimulating circulation. Besides, it also encourages the natural drainage of the lymph. However, it also brings oxygen and new nutrients to the cells. Another benefit of lymph drainage is, it can treat swelling and post-traumatic facial oedema.

  1. Relieves from insomnia and fatigue

Head massage promotes relaxation by relieving stress and tension from the body. Therefore, it improves a person’s sleep cycle.

  1. Relieves from anxiety and depression

Head massage encourages the oxygen supply to the brain, which helps to reduce anxiety and boosts one’s mood. Besides, oxygen allows you to think clearly along with creativity, which stops you from falling into depression.

  1. Boost energy levels

As Indian head massage works with the Ayurvedic concept, it brings efficient energy to the body.

  1. Increase memory capabilities

  2. As human nature, we often face short term memory difficulties due to disorganized thoughts in our brain. That disorganization makes our brains difficult to collect thoughts and occurrences. Indian head massage usually slows us down and guide sensual awareness. These clams down our brain and boost memory capabilities
