In this course you will learn how to read and pronounce Sanskrit written in English script.
Sanskrit is the ancient language in which the Hindu and yogic texts were written in. Sanskrit uses an alphabet of 50+ letters, while in English we only have 26 letters. When Sanskrit is written in Latin symbols, i.e. in English letters there are some special ways of writing all the letters that are beyond the English 26 alphabet letters permit us. This is called transliteration.
When you encounter Sanskrit words like: Śīrṣāsana, or Ājñā how are they pronounced? The first will sound something like ‘Shirshasana’, and the second like ‘Agya’.
How would you read this mantra then?
oṃ tryámbakaṃ yajāmahe sughandhíṃ puṣṭivardhánam
urvārukam iva bandhánān mṛtyor mukṣīya māmṛtāt
