Black and White Portrait Photography
Black and White Portrait Photography
In the digital age many photographers have lost (or never had) the art of a creating a good B&W image. It is not as simple as hitting the B&W icon and converting your favourite colour image to black and white.
Some colour images will work better in black and white but they need more processing than a simple “desaturate” in photoshop.
More often though, the competent black and white photographer will follow a tried and true procedure in creating an outstanding black and white image.
Inspiration is the key to most great photography. Study the great black and white photographers and get excited about the benefits of the monochrome medium.
Visualisation allows you to picture in your mind the resulting image in black and white. Get your head into the black and white space. Think in black and white and you will learn to ‘see” in black and white.
Black and white portraiture can show us more about our subject because we are not distracted by their clothing colour, the colour of their eyes or skin. It breaks down the image to a moment and an expression.
In this course I will teach you how to “see” in black and white, how to set up your camera and the lighting differences that make black and white portraits so stunning.
You will also see four themed black and white shoots with a professional model so you can learn how to pose, light, expose and compose your images
We will talk about choosing the right locations for your portrait as well as composing and exposing in black and white.
Black and white portraits can have amazing impact or subtlety. You can produce images that are more artistic, beautiful and timeless than the plethora of colour images we are exposed to every day.
Most importantly you can separate yourself into a genre that the world loves and for which few are satisfying the demand.
Note: This course is about getting optimum results in your camera. It doesn't contain any post production instruction.
