Back pain management
This is an introductory course that is designed to educate students and/or practitioners on back pain, the impact back pain has on individuals and society as a whole, as well as some prevention and treatment strategies. This course will include information on what the nature of pain is, acute versus chronic pain, and the different types of pain experienced by individuals on a day-to-day basis. We will also provide a brief overview of the musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology of the back which includes the spinal column, vertebrae, the spinal cord and spinal nerves, superficial, intermediate and deep muscles of the back, as well as the ligaments and tendons. In this section of the course it helps to have a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology in order to grasp the content of the lectures. We will also discuss various medical conditions which result in individuals experiencing back pain either in an acute or chronic form, including spondylosis, osteoporosis, sacroiliac joint dysfunction and rheumatoid arthritis. Toward the end of the course, we will then discuss what a medical consultation (Undertaken by a general practitioner) for back pain should entail as well as various treatment methods, including exercise rehabilitation and complimentary therapies used in practice to prevent, alleviate and treat back pain.
