Walking Bass Lines - Beginner's Guide

Walking bass lines are the most common approach to play jazz. As the name implies, walking means that a moving feeling should be created with the bass part. Just like walking with our feet, walking bass lines are meant to take us somewhere. Movement is the main concept with walking bass lines.

Walking bass lines are not only played in jazz and also, concepts of walking bass lines can be used in genres like rock, blues, r&b, gospel, latin, country and many other types of music. What you need to take away from that is, you don’t have to be a jazz player in order to learn how to play walking bass lines. Essentially, when you are encountered with a set of chords, deciding which notes to play and determining the order to play them is always a challenge for us bass players, since we need to outline chords and the direction of the progression. Learning how to play walking bass lines helps us to make those decisions more consciously, in that sense.
