Pokémon and Egyptian Mythology

Pokémon and Egyptian Mythology

This course covers 18 different Pokémon and their connection to Egyptian culture and mythology. This course is not a comprehensive overview of Egyptian mythology; instead, we focus on the aspects of Ancient Egypt that have to do with Pokemon. Students will come away with a basic understanding of many of the Egyptian gods and magical creatures, and how they are connected to their favorite Pokemon.

Here are the Pokemon and Egyptian references we will cover in class. We'll start with a few things from Egyptian culture. For instance, we'll talk about how Cofagrigus was inspired by Egyptian Sacrophagi, and we'll talk about how the similarities between the Pokemon Unown and ancient Hieroglyphs. After that, we'll move onto Egyptian mythology. We'll start with the original god of Egypt (Ptah) and compare it to the "original" Pokemon - Arceus. Then we'll talk about Ra and all of its iterations, including Sekhmet, Hathor, Wadjet, Nekhbet, and Bastet - all possible inspirations for Pokemon (including Solgaleo, Volcarona, Arbok, Mandibuzz, and Umbreon). Next is the crocodile god - Sobek - and its relationship to the Pokemon Krokorok. This is followed by even more Pokemon and Egyptian god comparisons - Yveltal/Set, Pidgeotto/Horus, Lucario/Anubis, Dialga/Thoth, Palkia/Khonsu, and Cosmoem/Nut. Yamask might be inspired by the Egyptian concept of a soul, so we'll talk about that, too. Finally, we'll finish up with two magical creatures from Egyptian mythology - Moltres being inspired by the Bennu bird, and Shinx being modeled after the Sphinx.
