ESL Business English: Presenting/Describing a Chart or Graph

ESL Business English: Presenting/Describing a Chart or Graph

As part of your job, do you sometimes have to describe in words (in English) a line chart or graph? It might be a graph showing sales, or units of production, or an important KPI. Sometimes the chart may plot two variables or elements, and you need to compare and contrast the two elements.

Identifying the main movements - direction and intensity - of a line chart and then putting that succinctly and accurately into words is not an easy task, but it is something that business professionals need to know how to do.

In this Course, you'll learn first-hand from a financial economist, veteran English teacher, and the founder of the business English language school, the Online Canadian Academy:

(1) How to describe in words, succinctly and professionally, the activity of a line chart.

(2) How to analyze a complicated, real-life line chart using the process of divide and conquer.

(3) How to compare and contrast the activity of two elements or variables in a line chart.

(4) How to improve your professionalism by using business vocabulary - words and expressions - appropriate for describing a line chart.

(5) How to improve your English fluency by using connectors: words and phrases that connect a sentence to the prior sentence.

By the time that you finish this Course, you will be better prepared to analyze a line chart and present a business-appropriate, professional description of the chart whether in a meeting of colleagues, customers or investors.

Please note that your level of English proficiency should be intermediate or higher.
